NPO Spotlight - Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund
Mission:
The Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund serves U.S. military personnel wounded or injured in service to the nation and their families.
About the Organization:
The Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund was created in October 2000 as a program of the Intrepid Foundation, itself founded by the late Zachary and Elizabeth Fisher, who began making financial contributions in 1982 to the families of hundreds of U.S. military personnel killed in the line of duty. After 9/11 and the beginning of military operations in Afghanistan, the effort was expanded to help meet growing need. IFHF was established as an independent 501(c)(3) organization in October 2003.
Through 2005, IFHF had provided nearly $20 million to families of military personnel killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. When federal legislation substantially increased the benefits granted to military families killed in action, the fund decided to direct its support to meeting the needs of severely injured veterans. In January 2007, the fund completed construction of the Center for the Intrepid, a $55 million, 60,000-square-foot outpatient physical rehabilitation center for catastrophically disabled veterans at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio.
IFHF next focused on traumatic brain injuries, completing construction of the National Intrepid Center of Excellence adjacent to the new Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in June 2010. NICoE provides services in advanced diagnostics, initial treatment plan and family education, introduction to therapeutic modalities, referral, and reintegration support for military personnel and veterans with TBI, post-traumatic stress, and/or complex psychological health issues. The center also conducts research, tests new protocols, and provides comprehensive training and education to patients, providers, and military families.
Current Programs:
To enhance research on and the diagnosis and treatment of TBI, PTSD, and related conditions, IFHF is building several NICoE satellite centers at some of the largest military deployment bases in the country, including Ft. Belvoir in Virginia and Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. In addition, IFHF will provide financial support for research efforts at these facilities as well as at NICoE. The Fisher House Foundation, the fund's sister organization, provides housing at each major military medical center to accommodate patients' families and will suppor construction of patient family housing at each of the proposed satellite center locations.
