New York Academy of Sciences

Mission:
To advance scientific knowledge, positively impact major global challenges with science-based solutions, and increase the number of scientifically informed individuals in society at large.

About the Organization:
The New York Academy of Sciences (originally named the Lyceum of Natural History in the City of New York) was founded in 1817 to create a global community of science for the benefit of humanity. Today, the organization is the world's only global academy of science, offering programs, events, publications, and resources for the general public and more than 25,000 members from 140 countries. Past NYAS members have included presidents Thomas Jefferson and James Monroe, Charles Darwin, John James Audubon, and Albert Einstein.

Current Programs:
The NYAS Frontiers of Science program convenes discussion groups to explore ideas and exchange information in the biological, chemical, and computational sciences, while the Committee on the Human Rights of Scientists fights on behalf of scientists, health professionals, engineers, and educators who have been detained, imprisoned, exiled, or deprived of the right to pursue science. NYAS also offers a Physical Sciences and Engineering program to exchange ideas and data in interdisciplinary fields; a Scientists Without Borders program to mobilize and coordinate science-based efforts in the developing world; a Green Science and Sustainability program to help further the reevaluation of environmental and energy strategies worldwide; and the Science Alliance for Graduate Students and Postdocs, which provides young investigators with guidance on careers, networking, and mentoring. The organization also sponsors eight to twelve conferences a year on basic and applied frontier research fields and the broader societal roles of science and technology.

Web Site:
The NYAS Web site provides information on upcoming events and publications as well as a searchable database of eBriefings, which include meeting reports, multimedia elements, and links to related resources. Channels on the site organize event listings, publications, and eBriefings by topic, such as brain dysfunction and neuroimmunology, biochemical pharmacology, the history and philosophy of science, psychology, and green buildings. The site also offers several RSS feeds and the Science & the City webzine, which includes podcasts and a blog.

Funding:
The New York Academy of Sciences receives funding from individuals, corporations, and foundations in addition to government support.
