NPO Spotlight - God's Love We Deliver

Mission:
To improve the health and well-being of men, women, and children living with HIV/AIDS, cancer, and other serious illnesses by alleviating hunger and malnutrition.

About the Organization:
God's Love We Deliver prepares and delivers nutritious meals made from fresh ingredients for free to people who, because of their illness, are unable to prepare meals for themselves. GLWD and its fourteen hundred active volunteers serve more than three thousand meals every weekday throughout the five boroughs of New York City; Hudson County, New Jersey; and two HIV/AIDS organizations in Newark, New Jersey. It also provides meals to the dependent children of primary clients and the senior caregivers (age 60 and older) of senior clients. In addition, the organization offers illness-specific nutrition education and counseling to clients, their families, and caregivers, as well as to other service groups. Approximately 55 percent of GLWD clients are 50 years old or older, 47 percent are women, and 15 percent, children. Ninety percent live at or below the poverty level, often in some of the poorest, most underserved neighborhoods.

Current Programs:
God's Love We Deliver offers three main services. The Home-Delivered Meal Program, operated out of an industrial-size kitchen overseen by a chef and dieticians, delivers two meals each weekday that fulfill the daily nutritional needs of people with serious illness. Approximately 45 percent require special meals modified to accommodate individual dietary restrictions. Through the Nutrition and Counseling Program, GLWD nutrition specialists provide individual telephone sessions, family counseling sessions, and group workshops for affected populations. The nutrition-services staff offers workshops for community-based organizations in the region and disseminates educational materials to agencies and individuals beyond the GLWD service area. And the Client Advocacy Program assists clients and those who do not qualify for GLWD services in accessing a broad range of support services. Program staff also advocate on clients' behalf when necessary, make referrals, assist in housing crises, and help secure medical benefits and other services.

Web Site:
The God's Love We Deliver site contains a timeline of the organization's history, frequently asked questions, and information about becoming a client, volunteer, or intern. The site also features nutrition information, recipes, and links to additional resources.

Funding:
God's Love We Deliver is supported by individual contributions, government contracts, foundation and corporate grants, special events, and other sources. Due to food safety issues and specialized menus, GLWD does not accept food donations, with the exception of nonperishable items for use in holiday food baskets. It also welcomes holiday gift items for clients and their children.
