NPO Spotlight - Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS

Mission:
To fund the social service work of the Actors' Fund and award grants to AIDS service organizations nationwide.

About the Organization:
Equity Fights AIDS was founded in 1987 by the Council of Actors' Equity Association, with money raised through Equity theater companies across the country earmarked for the Actors' Fund AIDS Initiative. Broadway Cares was founded in 1988 by members of the Producers' Group and shortly thereafter began to allocate funds to AIDS service groups nationwide, including Equity Fights AIDS. The two organizations merged in 1992 to become Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS (BC/EFA).

Current Programs:
Through its partnership with the Actors' Fund of America, BC/EFA supports five social service programs that offer direct assistance to entertainment industry professionals and performing artists coping with AIDS, HIV, and HIV-related issues. Through its National Grants Program, the organization also awards grants twice a year to hundreds of community-based AIDS service groups. Its other programs include outreach to schools and a new service that books industry celebrities for special events.

Web Site:
The BC/EFA site highlights affiliated efforts — including Classical Action and Dancers Responding to AIDSupcoming events, online fundraising auctions, and specialty merchandise available through an online catalog. The site also links to BC/EFA's annual reports and provides information on how to volunteer or purchase online tickets to BC/EFA and other industry-related events.

Funding:
BC/EFA relies 100 percent on fundraising to support its operations and activities. Members of the companies of Broadway, Off-Broadway, and national touring shows — including backstage crews, ushers, and box office personnel — contribute to the effort and together have raised more than $100 million to fight AIDS.
