NPO Spotlight - Food Bank for New York City

Mission:
To end hunger by organizing food, information, and support for community survival and dignity.

About the Organization:
The Food Bank for New York City is the nation's largest food bank and one of the largest distributors of free fresh produce — more than 11 million pounds a year, or 17 percent of total distribution. The organization now provides food to more than twelve hundred programs, including soup kitchens, food pantries, and shelters, and distributes more than 67 million pounds of food a year. Every day, it donates food and food-related supplies for 250,000 meals for New Yorkers at risk of going hungry. After Hurricane Katrina, 800,000 pounds of food usually designated for the New York food bank from America's Second Harvest, as well as 200,000 pounds from local companies, were diverted to hurricane victims in Louisiana and Mississippi, leaving the organization down one million pounds of food from this time last year.

Current Programs:
The Food Bank for New York City carries out research, public policy, and disaster relief initiatives. Its food programs encompass donated food; fresh produce; contracts with local, state, and federal governments to warehouse, purchase, and distribute food to emergency food programs; wholesale food purchases; repacking, with the help of three thousand volunteers; special meals, such as ethnic, kosher, and vegetarian options; and an after-school program that includes a hot meal. The food bank works with commercial banks for the month-long NYC Bank-to-Bank Partnership Food Drive, and with local supermarkets during the holiday season for the Check Out Hunger initiative.

Web Site:
The Food Bank for New York Web site contains information about hunger in the city, real people dealing with hunger, how to hold a food drive, and how to become a member agency. It also provides listings of network food programs by borough, program, ZIP code, and keyword; its partners in business, the food industry, philanthropy, and government; frequently asked questions; publications; and resources.

Funding:
The Food Bank for New York City is supported by individual gifts, corporate and government grants, and some foundation funding. Government contracts provide 63 percent of food donations; corporations, individuals, food drives, and others, 34 percent; and wholesale food suppliers, 3 percent.
