Self-Sufficiency Coordinator

Korean American Family Service Center - Self-Sufficiency Coordinator

Status: Exempt Full-time
Reports to: Director of Programs Supervises: N/A

Background

The Korean American Family Service Center is a leading, nonprofit organization that supports and empowers adults, youth and children to lead safe and healthy lives based on dignity, compassion and mutual respect. We are committed to preventing and ending domestic violence and relationship abuse, and creating a violence-free society. KAFSC has a dynamic team of 25 full-time and part-time staff members and an annual operating budget of over 1.2 million dollars.

The Self-Sufficiency Coordinator will develop a strong program direction and long-term strategy development in order to meet the economic aspirations of survivors of domestic violence and KAFSC clients. She is responsible for implementing KAFSC’s ESL, WANY, Legal Clinics, computer and financial literacy classes for survivors as well as managing referrals to job training and placement providers and comprehensive resource guide. She also manage KAFSC’s emergency fund for clients.

Key Responsibilities

Self-Sufficiency Program Execution

  • Manage and/or facilitate basic and advanced computer classes, ESL classes, communications skills classes, as well as other relevant workshops that assist survivors to become economically independent.
  • Recruit and manage hourly part-time or/and pro-bono instructors and provide guidance and assistance as needed.
  • Coordinate monthly legal clinics (six times per year) in partnership with Sanctuary for Families, In Motion, Queens Legal Services and other entities
  • Implement job training workshops or facilitate one-on-one financial skill development for survivors as needed
  • Research job placement, workforce development, banking programs, and microenterprise collaborations to afford survivors opportunities outside the Self-Sufficiency program’s current purview
  • Research scholarships and financial literacy development opportunities available to KAFSC survivors as well as facilitate assistance with completing paperwork and offering individual guidance to survivors. Provide interpretation/translation as needed

Self-Sufficiency/Economic Empowerment Program Mapping & Management

  • Document individual and program progress and produce and submit reports based on this data including Avon Foundation reports
  • Produce accurate reports and documentation of Self-Sufficiency program activities for organization’s database, grant reporting, website, and newsletter
  • Build and sustain relationships with current, new, and potential financial skills organizations; outreach for possible partnerships and resource-sharing in order to expand KAFSC’s reach and impact
  • Maintain a working knowledge of New York domestic violence service partners
  • Foster and maintain constructive working relationships with law enforcement, legal service agencies, courts, NYC Family Justice Centers, ACS, and other community organizations
  • Develop and update client resource guide & list of job training & legal partners

Community Education & Training

  • Work with Community Relations Coordinator and support volunteer trainings and other community education activities
  • Write articles in the newspapers/magazines or/and participate in the radio/TV shows as needed
  • Organize and participate in agency-wide outreach & fundraising activities
  • Attend and participate in coalition or/and external networking meetings

Counseling & Advocacy

  • Provide hotline and in-person counseling, and short-term crisis interventions for individuals and families with domestic violence, sexual assault and other issues as assigned
  • Coordinate with other community and social service agencies to meet client needs
  • Manage KAFSC’s Emergency Fund for clients who urgently need cash or other material support
  • Serves as a backup for the 24-hr Hotline

Administration

  • Ensure that all client records and documentation are complete, accurate and up-to-date
  • Prepare documents, reports, and statistics for all appropriate, program-related activities
  • Update and maintain the agency’s resource and referral guide
  • Provide administrative support to Director of Programs for special projects
  • Actively participate in bi-weekly clinical case conference meetings and collaborative meetings, annual board/staff retreat, and other fundraising events as appropriate
  • Actively participate in bi-weekly staff team meetings as well as clinical case conferences
  • Carry out other duties as assigned

Qualification

  • Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Counseling, Criminal Justice, Public Health or related fields.
  • In-depth knowledge of the dynamics of family violence or sexual assault or/and experience working with individuals who have experienced trauma
  • Oral and written fluency in English and Korean
  • Familiarity with Korean/Asian and immigrant community a plus
  • Sound judgment and a strong sense of social justice and activism
  • Collaborative attitude, positive attitude and sense of empathy towards victims
  • Strong dedication to furthering victims’ rights
  • Computer competency in Microsoft Office Suite and internet research
