PND Connections - Women and Smoking: A National and State-by-State Report Card

According to a study from the National Women's Law Center and the Oregon Health & Science University, roughly one in five women (21 percent) in the United States smoke — well above the goal of 12 percent, for all adults, established by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Women and Smoking: A National and State-by-State Report Card (127 pages, PDF) shows that most states fail to meet the objectives set by HHS, and too few have adopted strong tobacco control policies. In addition to women's health assessments for each state, the report discusses the economic costs related to women's smoking, the factors that influence smoking, and various policies and programs designed to reduce smoking among females. The report was funded by the American Legacy Foundation, the Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation, and the CIGNA Foundation funded the report, with additional support from the Ford Foundation and the Open Society Institute.
