Foundations and the Economic Crisis: Information You Can Use The Center's Focus on the Economic Crisis online information hub brings together news, research, interviews with leaders in the field, podcasts, and other resources. Many foundations have publicly announced their plans for how they will respond to the economic crisis. We've compiled a forecast chart providing an overview of these announcements and related news from our Philanthropy News Digest and other sources. For weekly updates on grants awarded in response to the economy, see our MapShots. You can also locate Foundation Center-affiliated libraries and nonprofit centers where you can access Foundation Directory Online (FDO) at no charge and where you'll find additional resources and guidance.
For all of you searching FDO for leads on foundations addressing the economic downturn, you can now use "economic crisis" as a subject term in the Search Grants section of the database to identify recently awarded grants and the foundations that awarded them. Accelerating Change for Women and Girls: The Role of Women's Funds finds that funding for women and girls has grown at a faster rate in recent years than foundation giving on the whole.
The Foundation Center analyzed overall giving by 55 women's funds, finding strong emphasis on giving to address domestic needs, particularly at the local level, with human rights, health, and economic empowerment as top grantmaking priorities.
