Purpose of the grant:
To ensure low-income residents benefit from Anacostia River development.
Impact:
The recently-passed Anacostia Waterfront Corporation (AWC) Act establishes an independent corporation responsible for implementing the Anacostia Waterfront Initiative (AWI). The Act requires that: a certain percentage of new housing in the AWI area is affordable for low and moderate income households; local District residents have employment preference for jobs created in the AWI area; and measures are taken for the environmental restoration of the Anacostia River.
DC Appleseed is working to ensure that affordable housing, employment opportunity, and environmental restoration get better, not worse as a result of the revitalization.
Mission:
DC Appleseed is dedicated to solving important public policy problems facing the Washington, DC metropolitan area. To advance its mission, DC Appleseed organizes volunteers, including attorneys and other experts, who work in teams to analyze and develop solutions to problems facing the region.
