Purpose of the grant:
To continue providing child care for children whose parents live in shelters or transitional housing in Washington, DC.
Impact:
The economic downturn, city and state budget cuts and the United Way's shortfall in raising funds significantly hinder many non-profits, like Bright Beginnings, working to support the community's children and their families.
Bright Beginnings serves the educational, social, and physical needs of the District's most vulnerable residents -- children between the ages of six weeks and five years who are without homes. The center offers free, full-day, year-round, and developmentally-appropriate care for approximately 100 children. As one of two child care centers in DC that offers free care to homeless children, Bright Beginnings is alleviating a desperate community shortage.
Mission:
The program is designed to:
- provide preschoolers with a safe, nurturing environment
- support parents as they stabilize their home lives
- prepare the children to enter kindergarten ready to learn
