Grantmakers in the News

Meyer Foundation, Harman Family Foundation, and Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation Sponsor DC Catalogue for Philanthropy
The Catalogue for Philanthropy, a new resource for donors in the Washington, DC area, highlights small charities doing outstanding work. The 70 nonprofits featured in the Catalogue represent a wide variety of organizations. All of the featured nonprofits have operating budgets under $2 million with most having significantly less. They were chosen from nearly 200 applicants by a panel of 25 grantmakers from 15 area foundations.
The Catalogue promotes the simplicity of charitable giving. The entire donation goes directly to the designated charity because the Catalogue has been fully paid for by foundation partners. A giving form lets donors choose as many charities as they wish, write one check, and have the Catalogue distribute the funds at no cost. Donors can also give directly using the contact information included in the Catalogue. Online giving is another option.
The Catalogue for Philanthropy originated in Massachusetts, where it is now in its seventh year. The DC Catalogue is the first to launch in another community, with additional catalogues expected in the future. Charities that would like to be included in next year’s Catalogue will be able to apply online beginning in February 2004.
