Couple Announces $4.6 Million in Challenge Grants to D.C.-Area Nonprofits

Carolyn and Jeffrey Leonard of Bethesda, Maryland, have announced challenge grants totaling $4.6 million to help four organizations expand their endowments and programs serving low-income and diverse communities in metropolitan Washington, D.C.

The organizations are Beacon House, a youth educational organization; City Year, which runs youth-service programs in the district; the Round House Theatre in Bethesda, which is one of the largest professional theatre companies in the metro area; and Strathmore, also in Bethesda, which provides affordable, accessible, multidisciplinary arts programming.

The Leonards, who operate the Carolyn and Jeffrey Leonard Charitable Fund, are life-long residents of the D.C. metro area, and the couple has worked with and supported each of the recipient organizations for many years. In addition, the Leonards supported the efforts of former President Bill Clinton and Nelson Mandela to launch City Year South Africa.
