Community Foundation and McGowan Fund Accepting Proposals to Help Low-Income Youth
The Community Foundation for the National Capital Region, working in partnership with the William C. McGowan Charitable Fund, is now accepting proposals from eligible nonprofit organizations for in-school and out-of-school programs, especially those focusing on inner-city areas, that directly improve academic and social outcomes for low-income youth in the District of Columbia and/or Prince George's County, Maryland. The grants awarded will range in size from $15,000 to $50,000. Proposals must be submitted by 4:00 p.m. on Monday, October 1, 2007.
Applicants must meet all of the following eligibility criteria to be considered for funding:
- Have a demonstrated track record implementing strategies to improve the academic achievement and future success of low-income youth
- Recognize the importance of providing holistic supports and work to ensure seamless transitions between and across programs and grades
- Be a 501(c) 3 charitable organization
- Serve residents living in the District of Columbia and/or Prince George's County, Maryland
The Fund occasionally may fund "seed" or start-up programs if the applying organization can demonstrate that the programs will improve academic and social outcomes for youth in the District of Columbia and Prince George's County.

The William C. McGowan Charitable Fund was originally established in Washington, DC in 1992. Though now located in Chicago, the Fund has long been committed to the Greater Washington region and wishes to maintain a philanthropic presence here. Through this new partnership, the Community Foundation of the National Capital Region will facilitate the Fund's grantmaking activities in this area.
