The Community Foundation for the National Capital Region Presented its 2005 Linowes Leadership Awards to Community Leaders

The Community Foundation for the National Capital Region recently presented its 2005 Linowes Leadership Awards to seven unsung heroes whose extraordinary efforts have had a positive impact throughout the Metropolitan area.

The seven awardees are:

  • Billy L. Chandler
    Staff Interviewer
    Visitors' Services Center
    Washington, DC
    co-founded VSC, an organization dedicated to helping men and women in the DC Jail

  • Robert E. (Bobby) Coward, Jr.
    Co-Founder and Director, DIRECT Action (Disabled Individuals for Real Empowerment and Community Training)
    Chair, National Capital Area ADAPT (American Disabled for Attendant Programs Today)
    Washington, DC
    a forceful advocate for people living with disabilities, leading the drive at a local level for independence and full integration into society

  • Han-Hoan Duc Dang
    Chair and President
    Maryland Vietnamese Mutual Association
    Rockville, Maryland and Silver Spring, Maryland
    is dedicated to creating a multicultural community that is open and inclusive

  • Martha Delgado, Youth Awardee
    Peer Educator and Youth Advisory Board Member
    Identity, Inc.
    Gaithersburg, Maryland
    encourages other Latino youth to become active in their community

  • Isabel van Isschot
    Interpreter Services Department Director
    La Clinica del Pueblo
    Washington, DC
    believes that language difficulties should not be an obstacle to receiving high quality health care

  • William (Bill) and Sharon Murphy
    Founders and Co-Directors
    Mary House
    Washington, DC
    for 25 years, have helped the homeless by offering transitional housing and support services

Now in its eighth year, the Linowes Leadership Awards recognizes social entrepreneurs each year who have been a force for positive change in the metropolitan DC area. These unsung heroes represent the best of the region's grassroots leadership. The individual and nonprofit monetary awards are $5,000.
