Meyer Foundation and Partners Publish Study on
Next Generation Nonprofit Leaders
The Eugene and Agnes E. Meyer Foundation, in partnership with CompassPoint Nonprofit Services, The Annie E. Casey Foundation, and Idealist.org, recently published a survey on emerging nonprofit leaders. The results of this survey, which is the largest to date focusing on the future of leadership in the nonprofit sector, are presented in the report Ready to Lead? Next Generation Leaders Speak Out.
The survey was conducted in September 2007 and contains input from close to 6,000 next generation leaders across the country about the benefits and disadvantages of heading a nonprofit organization. Researchers also conducted six focus groups in four cities as part of the data collection for the report: San Francisco, CA; Milpitas, CA (Silicon Valley); Omaha, NE, and Washington, DC.
According to the report, a skilled, committed, and diverse pool of next generation leaders would like to be nonprofit executive directors in the future. However, there are significant barriers, including work-life balance, insufficient life-long earning potential, lack of mentorship, and overwhelming fundraising responsibilities, which may prevent many younger nonprofit staff from becoming executives.
The complete 28-page report can be downloaded from the Meyer Foundation web site or the CompassPoint web site.
