The Washington Post Honors Twenty Local Educators with Outstanding Teacher Awards

Twenty teachers from the Washington metropolitan area were honored by the Washington Post Educational Foundation for making a huge difference in the lives of their students. The teachers, one from each of the area's 19 public school systems and one representing private schools, were given Agnes Meyer Outstanding Teacher Awards after being selected by their individual school systems. Nominations were made by parents, supervisors, colleagues and students.

The awards, which have been given since 1983, are named for Agnes Meyer, the wife of Eugene Meyer, publisher of the Washington Post from 1933 to 1946. Mrs. Meyer was a strong supporter of public education. These awards are given to teachers who have shown initiative, creativity and exceptional professionalism. Winners received a crystal apple from Tiffany and a check for $3,000.
