American Legacy Foundation Plans to Establish a National Institute for Tobacco Research in the Metropolitan Area
The American Legacy Foundation plans to establish the Steven A. Schroeder National Institute for Tobacco Research and Policy Studies to advance the science behind social marketing, smoking cessation and tobacco control policy.
The Institute will work to identify research opportunities linked to the nation’s number-one cause of preventable death, tobacco-related disease. Findings will be shared through scientific meetings, reports and various forums, all with the intent of advancing the knowledge base of tobacco use prevention and cessation and then translating the findings into public health practice.
The Institute will be named for Dr. Steven A. Schroeder, a founding board member and former board chairman of the American Legacy Foundation and past president of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. It will focus on three areas of research pertaining to emerging tobacco-related science:
- Social marketing
Advancing the science related to evaluating counter-marketing and other communication interventions.
- Cessation
Advancing research related to improving the quality and access to, as well as consumer demand, for cessation (quit smoking) services.
- Harm Reduction
Educating the public regarding the truth behind reduced harm products.
