DC Community Foundation Receives Communication Award

The Community Foundation for the National Capital Region has received the 2008 Wilmer Shields Rich Gold Award for Annual or Biennial Reports in the category of Community and Public Foundations. This award was given to recognize the foundation's 2008 annual report, The Gift of Opportunity, as an example of excellence in communication.

Each year the Council on Foundations gives out the Wilmer Shields Rich Awards to showcase the ways foundations and corporate giving programs use communications strategies and techniques to advance their grantmaking goals. Award categories alternate every other year, helping to ensure that the winning projects are selected from a large and diverse pool of entries.

These awards, which began in 1984, are named for Wilmer Shields Rich, executive director of the National Council on Community Foundations (now the Council on Foundations) from 1957 to 1968, who was an early champion of public accountability by charitable foundations in both their resources and activities. The awards program also seeks to educate the field of organized philanthropy about creative and strategic communications. Strategic communications is defined as a deliberate and managed process-not just a set of products-that encourages others to think and act in ways supportive of a goal that is vital to the mission of the foundation. The process involves communications that are comprehensive, integrated, targeted, and well timed.
