Training Opportunities


Staff at the Foundation Center - Washington, DC present a regular schedule of classes on topics such as grantseeking and proposal writing. Please refer to our Education and Events Calendar for detailed information on our training sessions.

Telephone Reference

Nonprofit and governmental organizations and individuals
The Foundation Center library staff respond to simple telephone inquiries about the library's collections and services. We may suggest that you pose your question by e-mail to the Center's Online Librarian, if this option is available to you. For complex questions that fall outside the straightforward inquiries that can be answered over the telephone, we may also suggest that you pay a visit to our library or to a Cooperating Collection or public library near your residence or office.

Grantmakers
We offer a variety of services to grantmakers, including telephone reference. For complex reference questions we suggest that you call our Grantmaker Services Hotline, (212) 807-2446, at our New York headquarters. Or we may, if appropriate, call on your behalf.

Associates
Customized services including extensive reference is available for members of our Associates Program. Simply send an e-mail or place a toll-free call to the Associates Program staff using the contact information provided when you became a member. Please include your Associates Program account number when placing a request for service. Click here for more information about the Associates Program.

Media
Requests for factual information from members of the media will be answered as promptly as staff time and resources allow. For responses that require more extensive research, we suggest that you check the Media section of our web site or pay a visit to the library. Media requests entailing interpretation of facts or regarding trends in foundation giving will be referred to the office of the President at the Foundation Center's headquarters in New York.

Photocopying


Equipment for photocopying is available at the library. Visitors may also print from the library's public computers. Library visitors are reminded to observe the federal laws regarding unauthorized duplication of copyrighted materials and software.

Fees
Nominal fees are charged for copying and printing materials: $.10 per page for photocopies and computer printouts. You do not need to bring coins. The library accepts cash, checks, and the following major credit cards: American Express, MasterCard, and Visa. Payment is collected at the end of each visit, and receipts are issued.

Use of Public Computers


Visitors have free access to a number of electronic fundraising directories, including Foundation Directory Online, FC Search: The Foundation Center's Database on CD-ROM, and Foundation Grants to Individuals Online, at computer workstations in the library. Library visitors may access the Internet at no charge at these workstations, including e-mail, for research related to nonprofit organizations and philanthropy only.

Services for People with Disabilities


To ensure equitable access to our library resources for all, the Foundation Center is committed to providing services to people with disabilities. These services include but are not limited to:

In the Library:

  • A wheelchair-accessible computer workstation with an adjustable table.

  • MAGic 10.0 is a software program that enlarges text and images and reads text aloud on a computer monitor. See a reference librarian upon arrival.

  • JAWS 9.0, a screen reading software program, is available for persons who are blind. See a reference librarian upon arrival.

  • Kurzweil 1000, a software program that, when used with a scanner, reads text aloud. See a reference librarian upon arrival.

  • Aladdin Classic, a magnification system that enlarges text and images.

In the Classroom:

  • For the hearing impaired, a signer is available upon request for our scheduled training sessions. Two weeks advance notice is requested. Please contact us at dclibrary@foundationcenter.org.

  • For other accommodations related to our training sessions, please contact us at dclibrary@foundationcenter.org or call 202-331-1400, extension 0. Again, advance notice is appreciated.

From Home:

  • Loans of Center-issued publications, and selected publications by other publishers, are available to individuals whose disabilities make visiting a Foundation Center Library or Cooperating Collection either impossible or a hardship. If you are interested in finding out more about this program, please click here.

Book and CD-ROM Sales


Books and CD-ROMs in the Foundation Center's publications catalog are available for purchase in the library, with the exception of FC Search. Please call 202-331-1400, ext. "0," to ensure that the publication you want is in stock. Purchases at the Washington, DC, library are subject to DC sales tax of 5.75 percent unless a copy of your DC sales tax exemption certificate is presented at the time of your purchase (note that this certificate is different from your federal tax exemption).

We accept cash, checks, and credit cards (American Express, MasterCard, Visa).

To order a publication by phone, call Customer Service at 1-800-424-9836. You may also place an order electronically through the Marketplace area of the Center's Web site.

Interlibrary Loan


We do not participate in interlibrary loan programs.

Weekend Lending Program
