NPO Spotlight - Flashes of Hope
Mission:
To change, through photography, the way children with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses see themselves.
About the Organization:
Flashes of Hope aims to photograph every child with cancer until a cure is found. Volunteer photographers and stylists photograph children in hospitals across the country. All services are provided free of charge by volunteers. The organization has chapters in fifty cities and provides training to chapter directors; meets with hospital officials; recruits volunteers; and supervises the first photo shoot at each new chapter.
Current Programs:
Each month volunteer photographers and stylists transform hospital playrooms, waiting areas, and even hallways into photography studios, where each child is photographed individually and with their closest supporters — siblings, parents, and often a favorite nurse. Each family is given framed enlargements, proofs, and a CD of the photographs so they can make additional prints. Established in 2001, Flashes of Hope will photograph sixty-five hundred children in 2012, for a total of nearly twenty-five thousand since its inception.
The Kick-It campaign raises funds for pediatric, adolescent, and young adult cancer research by collecting donations through organized kickball games. Launched in June 2009 by a ten-year-old cancer patient and run by Flashes of Hope's national office, it has raised $1.2 million to date. Kick-It works with national medical advisory boards — from Alex's Lemonade Stand, the Children's Tumor Foundation, and Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation — to identify and support the most promising studies.
Web Site:
Visitors to the site can browse an archive of select photographs as well as slide shows and videos from photo shoots; check the calendar for upcoming events and shoot dates; and view lists of volunteer photographers in each city. They can also contact chapter directors, sign up to receive e-newsletters, or support the organization. Those interested in volunteering can apply to start a chapter or become a volunteer photographer or stylist.
Funding:
Flashes of Hope is supported by individuals, foundations, and corporations. The Jeff Gordon Children's Foundation and the Cleveland Indians are major partners of the Kick-It campaign.
