NPO Spotlight - Raising A Reader
Mission:
To encourage parents to adopt a routine of daily "book cuddling" with their young children so as to help foster healthy brain development, parent-child bonding, and the early literacy skills needed for school success.
About the Organization:
Raising A Reader was developed through a partnership with the Peninsula Community Foundation and the San Mateo County Library. After PCF and the Community Foundation Silicon Valley merged to form the Silicon Valley Community Foundation in 2007, RAR remained a supporting organization of the foundation. Over the last decade, the Raising A Reader program has exposed more than 800,000 children to the joys of reading.
Current Programs:
Offered at host agencies nationwide, the Raising A Reader program is designed to help families develop, practice, and sustain the habit of reading together by offering red bags filled with a selection of classic children's books that are rotated on a weekly basis. Participating families also receive training and support from program implementers and a blue library bag for each child in the program. In addition, the program provides affiliate network members with the resources to start, sustain, and expand their own reading program, including access to an online community, webinars and additional training opportunities, a quarterly newsletter, and an annual National Affiliate Institute, through which agencies meet to share best practices from the field, review the latest research, participate in nuts-and-bolts sessions, and network.
Web Site:
Visitors to the Raising A Reader site can learn how to launch the program in their communities; learn more about the organization's impact; explore a map of RAR sites; and stay up to date with recent news about the program. The site also features book-sharing tips for parents, an FAQ, and a donation portal.
Funding:
Raising A Reader is supported primarily by foundations and corporations.
