NPO Spotlight - Veterans Green Jobs

Mission:
To engage, transition, and connect military veterans with meaningful employment opportunities that serve our communities and environment.

About the Organization:
Veterans Green Jobs aims to address the high unemployment rate among post-9/11 veterans by helping them find career opportunities in sustainable sectors. The organization works to place veterans in jobs in energy efficiency and conservation, renewable and clean energy, green building, natural resources and outdoor conservation, environmental remediation and response, and sustainable agriculture.

Current Programs:
Program highlights include a job placement agency model that connects veterans with green-sector employers and certified training programs across the country. The organization also offers one-on-one counseling. In eight Western states, outdoor conservation and wildland firefighting programs, offered in partnership with conservation corps, the U.S. Forest Service, the Bureau of Land Management and other government agencies, and provide short-term seasonal opportunities that include hands-on experience, skill-building, and certifications.

In collaboration with the public sector, private businesses, and other nonprofit organizations, VGJ is building self-sustaining opportunities through contract and revenue-generating enterprises in solar energy, energy efficiency, heating and air conditioning services, and recycled home improvement materials.

Web Site:
Veterans who visit the organization's site can browse jobs, learn about how to get connected with training and job opportunities, and/or fill out an interest form. In addition, employers and homeowners in the Denver area can learn how to hire veterans for green jobs and residential solar, HVAC, energy efficiency, and health and safety positions, while others can make a donation to the organization or learn about volunteer opportunities.

Funding:
Veterans Green Jobs is supported by donations from individuals as well as public and private entities such as the Walmart Foundation, the Call of Duty Endowment, the Bob Woodruff Foundation, the Anschutz Foundation, El Pomar Foundation, and the Colorado Energy Office.
