NPO Spotlight - National Hispanic Media Coalition

Mission:
To educate media corporations about the importance of hiring Latinos at all levels; provide professional development to augment the pool of Latino talent; challenge media that exploit negative Latino stereotypes; and scrutinize and advocate for media and telecommunications policy issues.

About the Organization:
Created in 1986, the National Hispanic Media Coalition is a nonpartisan nonprofit media advocacy and civil rights organization created to advance Latino employment and programming equity in the entertainment industry and advocate for telecommunications policies that benefit Latinos and other people of color. With headquarters in Pasadena as well as a Washington, D.C., office, NHMC has state chapters in California, New York, Arizona, and Michigan.

Together with representatives of the African American, Native American, and Asian Pacific American communities, NHMC has persuaded the nation's four major television networks to improve their workforce diversity and disclose annual employment and diversity statistics. The organization campaigns against hate speech and files petitions with the Federal Communications Commission to deny licenses to radio and television stations in cases of inadequate representation of Latinos among employees, violations of FCC rules during prime-time Spanish-language broadcasts, and/or lack of FCC-mandated children's programs. In addition, the organization works to nurture Latino writers and connect them with entertainment industry executives.

Current Programs:
The National Latino Media Council/National Hispanic Media Coalition Television Writers Program is a five-week workshop in which ten writers complete a half-hour comedy or one-hour dramatic script in English and, if selected, are then mentored by network executives with the goal of being placed on a show. NHMC also conducts campaigns to take programs that use hate speech or otherwise encourage discrimination off the air, and advocates for policies in support of media industry diversity, universal broadband access, network neutrality, consumer protection, positive portrayals of Latinos in the media, expansion of low-power FM, reduced prison phone rates, and competition in the telecommunications industry.

NHMC also presents annual Impact Awards recognizing outstanding service to the Latino community, outstanding performance in television and film categories, and other accomplishments. In addition, the coalition hosts a Latino Mediacon and Expo.

Web Site:
Visitors to the site can read about current issues and campaigns; take action by downloading sample letters to the FCC, Congress, or advertisers protesting programs that use hate speech; and sign petitions. The site also offers bi-monthly newsletters, research reports and surveys, video interviews with successful alumni of the writers program, and TV network report cards. Visitors also can make donations to the organization.

Funding:
NHMC is supported by individuals, corporations, and foundations, including the W.K. Kellogg and Ford foundations, Atlantic Philanthropies, and the Media Democracy Fund.
