NPO Spotlight - Bottomless Closet
Mission:
To help disadvantaged women in New York City become self-sufficient in their professional and private lives.
About the Organization:
Bottomless Closet was established by a group of volunteers in the late 1990s in response to a New York Times article that described the obstacles faced by mothers on public assistance who were seeking work, including a lack of appropriate clothing and insufficient self-confidence to present themselves professionally in an interview. To address these issues, the organization provides business attire and career guidance for women in need in New York City. Today, the organization serves a wide range of women, including those who are on public assistance, formerly incarcerated, single mothers, survivors of domestic violence, and living in shelters.
Current Programs:
Bottomless Closet helps women select interview-appropriate clothing from its boutique shop in New York City; offers one-on-one assistance in resume preparation, interview techniques, and presentation; and provides expert-taught workshops in professional development, financial management, and personal enrichment. Workshops topics include goal setting, budgeting, time management, helping children succeed in school, buying a home, networking and mentoring, and business etiquette.

The Bottomless Closet Web site offers information on how to become a volunteer of the organization, donate money or clothing, or become a Bottomless Closet client. The site also features client success stories and weekly updates on what the organization is doing.
Funding:
Bottomless Closet receives donations of money and clothing from individuals, foundations, corporations, clothing retailers, and the City of New York.
