NPO Spotlight - Roca

Mission:
To help disengaged and disenfranchised young people move out of violence and poverty.

About the Organization:
Chelsea, Massachusetts-based Roca (which means "rock" in Spanish) is a youth development organization working to create a foundation "as solid as a rock" for young people trying to change their lives. Since its inception, the organization has encouraged and helped more than fifteen thousand troubled youth between the ages of 14 and 24 in Chelsea, Revere, and East Boston to leave the streets and gangs, take responsibility for their actions, and find employment.

Current Programs:
Roca works to re-engage youth through positive personal relationships that help them build life skills, education, and employment opportunities. The organization's High-Risk Youth Intervention Model, which is based on a framework used in the medical and mental health fields, includes one-on-one mentoring, stage-based programming, and partnerships with the institutions in a young person's life. The organization's basic and advanced transitional employment programs teach participants who have trouble getting and keeping jobs how to follow instructions, while its Peacemaking Circles program teaches participants and their families how to deal with extremely painful and difficult issues, how to manage their own healing process, and how to negotiate and connect with each other to promote safe solutions to conflict.

Web Site:
The Roca Web site features a gallery of program-related photos and videos; a section devoted to program outcomes; a recent news section; and a list of recent publications. In addition, visitors to the site can register as a volunteer, purchase a t-shirt developed by Roca participants, and/or make a donation.

Funding:
Roca receives funding from foundations, corporations, and individuals.
