NPO Spotlight - Make It Right

Mission:
To help redevelop the Lower Ninth Ward neighborhood of New Orleans by building safe, healthy, well-designed homes that celebrate the spirit of the community.

About the Organization:
Make It Right, a collaboration between actor Brad Pitt, Graft Architects, Cherokee Gives Back, and William McDonough + Partners, was founded in 2007 to help rebuild homes in the Lower Ninth Ward neighborhood of New Orleans, which was badly damaged by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The organization focuses on building affordable, storm-resistant, and sustainable homes as quickly as possible while adhering to high-quality design principles.

Current Programs:
The core Make It Right collaborators have partnered with a neighborhood coalition of nonprofits to ensure that the redeveloped neighborhood will be demonstrably diverse and have access to the best expertise available. So far, eight homes have been completed as part of the project, with several additional single-family and duplex homes under construction.

Web Site:
The Make It Right Web site features a satellite map of completed homes as well as information about the Lower Ninth Ward and Hurricane Katrina. The site also provides information on making a donation as well as an interactive tool that explains the costs associated with each piece of a Make It Right home. Prospective Lower Ninth Ward homeowners can also use the site to apply for a home. In addition, the online store sells Make It Right merchandise, the proceeds from which support the building of homes.

Funding:
Make It Right receives funding from individuals, corporations, and foundations.
