NPO Spotlight - Center for Democracy and Technology
Mission:
To promote democratic values and constitutional liberties in the digital age.
About the Organization:
The Center for Democracy and Technology was founded in 1994 by Jerry Berman and several of his colleagues from the Electronic Frontier Foundation to show that engagement in the "nitty gritty" process of legislative deal making is key to protecting civil liberties. CDT has helped shape government policies on Internet issues such as First Amendment rights, Fourth Amendment "search and seizure" protections, the use of high-security encryption, and the privacy of online consumers.
Current Programs:
CDT convenes and operates working groups comprised of public interest and commercial representatives with divergent views to explore solutions to critical policy issues. The organization also promotes its own policy positions in the United States and globally through a variety of advocacy, grassroots organizing, and litigation efforts.
Web Site:
The CDT Web site features news on a range of topics, including consumer privacy, security and freedom, and open government; a legislative center complete with analyses of and recommendations for congressional legislation; articles by CDT staff members; and a library of policy-related podcasts. The site also offers transcripts of testimony and speeches, resources for activists, a blog, and information on how to donate.
Funding:
CDT receives funding from individuals, foundations, corporations, and trade associations; it does not accept government funding.
