NPO Spotlight - Art with Heart
Mission:
To empower youth in crisis through therapeutic books and programs that foster self-expression.
About the Organization:
Founded in 1996 through the American Institute of Graphic Arts in New York City, Art with Heart became an independent organization in 2002. It provides non-traditional mental health support to youth who have experienced trauma, illness, family dysfunction, or homelessness. The organization's publications and workshops provide children a means to express both their suffering and strength, enabling them to deal with their emotions.
Current Programs:
Art with Heart hosts workshops through Art Buddy, which teaches children about artistic expression and storytelling through paint, texture, and collage. In addition, the Chill & Spill journal was designed for youth dealing with illness as well as family dysfunction, grief and loss, self-esteem issues, and peer pressure.
Web Site:
The Art with Heart site features an E-newsletter that informs users of volunteer opportunities. The site also provides a link to Oodles of Doodles, a 48-page therapeutic activity book that uses creativity and humor to help hospitalized children during their recovery. Art with Heart's site also provides information on upcoming events and a link to its online shopping center, where books and other gifts are available.
Funding:
Art with Heart receives support from foundations, corporations, and individuals.
