NPO Spotlight: National Cristina Foundation
Mission:
To provide computer technology to people with disabilities, students at risk, and economically disadvantaged persons to give them the opportunity, through training, to lead more independent and productive lives.
About the Organization:
In 1981, Bruce McMahan donated a computer to his daughter Cristina's special education class. The positive reaction by Cristina, who has cerebral palsy, and her classmates led McMahan and Cristina's teacher, Yvette Marrin, to found the National Cristina Foundation, which has helped more than a million people with special needs and has encouraged the environmentally sound practice of giving outmoded technology a productive second life. NCF encourages corporations and individuals to donate used computer equipment, which it sends free to prescreened nonprofit organizations, schools, and public agencies that train, educate, or rehabilitate people. The organization has a staff of ten and works with thousands of participating organizations throughout the United States. It does not donate equipment directly to individuals.
Current Programs:
NCF acquires donations of used computer equipment from corporations and individuals, and distributes them to qualified organizations. It provides the recipients with information about setting up their own donation efforts and training staff or local high school students to repair the computers when necessary.
Web Site:
The NCF Web site supplies an overview of the donation process and a donor submission form. It also provides an online application for organizations that need equipment and a link to NCF's online magazine, Cristina Connections. Because of the high volume of applications, NCF only contacts groups that have been chosen to receive computers.
Funding:
NCF is supported by donations from individuals.
