The AOA, an agency within the Department of Health and Human Services, collaborates with other federal agencies, national organizations, and representatives of business to ensure that their programs and resources are targeted to the elderly and coordinated with those of its Aging Network. The latter offers a frequently updated list of aging-related resources, including reports, legislation updates, program announcements, and RFPs.

Alliance for Aging Research

A D.C.-based nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the health and independence of Americans as they age through public and private funding of medical research and geriatric education. The Alliance also awards a prestigious annual $200,000 grant for senior-level scientists conducting biomedical and clinical research on aging and co-administers the Paul Beeson Physician Faculty Scholars in Aging Research Program, a $36 million faculty development program to stimulate research, teaching, and practice of geriatric medicine in the U.S.

American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging

AAHSA addresses the concerns of nonprofit organizations that serve the elderly through interaction with Congress and various federal agencies.

American Federation for Aging Research

With a mission to promote healthier aging through biomedical research, the American Federation for Aging Research supports both basic and clinical biomedical research into aging and age-related diseases and conditions. During the last 16 years, AFAR has made grants of more than $39 million to over 1,200 new investigators.

American Geriatrics Society

The American Geriatrics Society, a professional organization of health-care providers dedicated to improving the health and well being of older adults, has a long history of effecting change in the provision of health care for the aging population and, over the last decade, has become an important force in shaping attitudes, policies, and practices regarding health care for older people.

American Society on Aging

The American Society on Aging is a membership organization dedicated to providing up-to-date information, research, training, and resources to professionals concerned with all aspects of aging. Visitors to the ASA site will find a variety of educational resources, conference listings, training opportunities, a job bank, and information on upcoming events in the field.

Brookdale Foundation Group

The New York-based Brookdale Foundation Group, a consortium of the Brookdale Foundation, the Glendale Foundation, and the Ramapo Trust, operates several grants programs aimed at helping the country's elderly population, including the Brookdale National Fellowship Program, the Group Respite Program, and the Relatives as Parents Program.

Ellison Medical Foundation

Established by Larry Ellison, the founder and CEO of software giant Oracle Corp., the Ellison Medical Foundation fosters research in the fields of aging and global infectious disease by means of grants to investigators at universities and laboratories within the United States. The foundation operates a number of programs, including a New Scholars Program, a Senior Scholars Program, a Conferences and Workshops Awards Program, a Training Program, and an Infrastructure Awards Program.

Gerontological Society of America

The mission of this D.C.-based organization is to promote interdisciplinary research in aging by expanding the quantity of and improving the quality of gerontological research, and by increasing its funding resources as well as to disseminate gerontological research knowledge to researchers, to practitioners, and to decision and opinion makers. On the society's Web site, visitors will find a variety of awards, fellowships and grant opportunities in related areas.

Grantmakers in Aging

Grantmakers in Aging, a nonprofit membership organization for staff and trustees of foundation and corporate grantmakers, seeks to aid grantmakers in responding to the needs of the aging American population by providing its members with information and services to encourage grantmaking in the field.

HealthandAge.com, the Web site of the Novartis Foundation for Gerontology, is an interactive online resource designed to promote interaction between the public and healthcare professionals.

Hospice Foundation of America

Founded in 1982, the Hospice Foundation of America provides leadership in the development and application of hospice and its philosophy of care with the goal of enhancing the American health-care system and the role of hospice within it.

Joha A. Hartford Foundation

Its overall goal is to increase the nation's capacity to provide effective, affordable care to its rapidly increasing older population. Today, the Foundation is America's leading philanthropy with a sustained interest in aging and health.

National Council on the Aging

NCOA is an association of organizations and professionals dedicated to promoting the dignity, self-determination, well-being, and contributions of older persons. The NCOA Web site features information on the association's surveys, research, and technical assistance and training programs. NCOA recently launched BenefitsCheckUp ( http://www.benefitscheckup.org/), a free, easy-to-use Web service that identifies federal and state assistance programs for older Americans.

Retirement Research Foundation

The Retirement Research Foundation, the nation's largest private foundation devoted solely to serving the needs of older Americans, invests approximately $9 million a year to support efforts in aging-related research and improve the care of the elderly. In addition to facts about older Americans, visitors to the site will find aging-related news briefs, lists of recent grants, and detailed application information and guidelines.
