The Organizational Effectiveness Program of the St. Paul-based
Otto Bremer Foundation is committed to strengthening
the capacity of nonprofit organizations in Minnesota,
Montana, North Dakota, and Wisconsin, and to developing a
network of organizational development resources outside
the Twin Cities area. The foundation also is working
closely with several partners to develop proposals that
will make organizational improvement tools available on
a sector-wide basis.
Edna McConnell Clark Foundation

The Edna McConnell Clark Foundation focuses on strengthening nonprofit youth development organizations so they can better serve more young people with high-quality programs. The foundation has been developing a new approach to grantmaking called Institution and Field Building (IFB). Key to the IFB approach is a comprehensive, multistage process used to identify promising youth development organizations, assess their overall capabilities, and subsequently invest in the growth of those organizations most capable of benefiting from this kind of support.

The Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation is an operating and
grantmaking foundation that works toward a vision of
self-sufficient people living in healthy communities. Drawing
from many sources, the foundation’s Leadership Learning
Series focuses on the challenges nonprofits face in developing
the leadership capabilities of individuals, teams, and organizations.
W.K. Kellogg Foundation

The W.K. Kellogg Foundation in Battle Creek, Michigan,
launched the Building Bridges initiative to support the
development of comprehensive educational programs for
managers and leaders in nonprofit and public organizations.
The goals of the initiative are to create a broader range
of educational programs and increase access so a more
diverse group of managers, volunteers, and students can
be trained in nonprofit management skills; to foster
comprehensive nonprofit management education so practitioners,
scholars, organizations, and institutions can improve current
practices and contribute to knowledge about the field; and
to strengthen the impact of educational programs on nonprofit
management practices. Note: The foundation is not currently
making grants under this initiative.
Agnes and Eugene Meyer Foundation

The Meyer Foundation supports community-based nonprofit
organizations in the greater Washington, D.C., area as a
means of fostering the well-being of all people in the
region. The foundation accomplishes its work by finding
visionary and talented nonprofit leaders; making early and
strategic investments in nonprofit organizations; strengthening
the organizational capacity of nonprofits in the region;
promoting a strong and influential nonprofit sector;
building partnerships to foster the sector's work; and
serving as a resource to other donors who want to make

Partnership for Effective Nonprofits

An initiative of the Foundation for Seacoast Health, the
Greater Piscataqua (NH) Community Foundation, and United
Way of the Greater Seacoast, PEN works with local funders
to strengthen the management, programs, and sustainability
of nonprofit organizations in southeastern New Hampshire
and York County, Maine.
Robin Hood Foundation

The Robin Hood Foundation invests in and provides extensive
hands-on management assistance to nonprofit organizations
working to end poverty in New York City. The foundation's
"high-engagement" approach to its grantees runs the gamut
from developing strategic plans and analyzing budgets, to
securing office space and negotiating leases, to bringing
in additional funders.
