Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas Foundation Invites School Personnel to Apply for Healthy Habits for Life Grants
Healthy Habits for Life is a major grantmaking program of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas Foundation that helps schools address childhood obesity. The program is offering a total of $150,000 in grants to assist schools working to promote healthy lifestyle choices among their students. The program will support school personnel in helping school-aged children reduce their cardiovascular risk, increase their physical activity, and/or learn healthy eating habits. Past grant recipients have used the funding to purchase pedometers for walking programs, heart rate monitors for physical education classes, nutritional and wellness curriculum materials, and Nintendo Wii game systems to help keep children active when inclement weather keeps them inside. The foundation encourages school nurses, physical education teachers, health and family and consumer science teachers, athletic directors, principals, and other school personnel to apply for a grant. Grants are available throughout the service area of the BCBSKS Foundation, which includes all Kansas counties except Johnson and Wyandotte. The maximum grant amount is $1,000. Grants are limited to one per school. Grants can be used for programs offered during the 2012 calendar year. Visit the BCBSKS Foundation Web site for complete grant guidelines, the application form, and program ideas.
