Earth Day Network Seeking Entries for Healthy and Sustainable School Food Journalism Prize

The Earth Day Network is accepting entries for the 2013 Healthy and Sustainable School Food Journalism Competition. Sponsored by the Edible Schoolyard Project and the Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism, the competition is designed to bring communities the hard facts about school food in the words of students who eat it themselves.

Open to high school students in the United States between the ages of 13 and 18, all articles submitted for consideration must be about the need for healthy, sustainable school food. Participants will submit a print article that creatively communicates a topic that relates to the current state of school food in the U.S.; the need for and benefits of healthy, sustainable school food; and policies and best practices that advance the goal of healthy, sustainable school food. All articles must have been published by the participant's school newspaper. Eligibility of articles published by news media other than the participant's school newspaper will be determined at the discretion of the sponsors.

The competition, which will be judged by best-selling author and food activist Michael Pollan, awards a $1,500 grand prize;$1,000 second prize; $500 third prize; and three fourth-place prizes of $300. In addition, winners will receive $200 for their journalism class and the opportunity to have their articles publicized on Earth Day Network's Web site.
