North Star Fund Accepting Grant Applications for Community Organizing and Activism in New York City

North Star Fund Accepting Grant Applications for Community Organizing and Activism in New York City

The North Star Fund, which supports grassroots activism and organizing to achieve social justice and the common good in New York City, is accepting grant applications for its Spring 2013 funding cycle.

For the spring cycle, applications are invited for two types of grants:

Grassroots Action Grants provide $5,000 or $10,000 to help new, emerging, and small groups engaged in community-organizing and base-building build leadership and grassroots activism in New York City's marginalized communities. Organizations with annual budgets under $250,000 engaged in community organizing are eligible to apply.

Innovative Activism Grants provide $5,000 or $10,000 to support exciting social justice work that creatively engages marginalized community members, builds their skills, and advances social justice in New York City. The North Star Fund will give priority to groups and projects with a direct connection to community organizing campaigns. Grants may be used to support projects in the following areas: 1) Arts & action — arts, media, and cultural projects and organizations that provide concrete, meaningful opportunities for participants and/or audience members to take action for social justice, preferably in the context of an ongoing campaign for policy change; 2) Resources for organizing — projects that build the capacity of organizing groups based in marginalized communities; and 3) Alternative institution building — projects that build institutions outside the structure of government and existing institutions to meet a social justice need in low-income communities of color and other marginalized communities. Eligible groups are organizations with budgets under $800,000.

The fund will hold an informational workshop for applicants on January 28, 2013.

Visit the North Star Fund Web site for complete grantmaking guidelines, information on the applicant workshop, and application procedures.
