Applications Invited for Florida "Protect Our Reefs" Grants Program
Applications Invited for Florida "Protect Our Reefs" Grants Program
With funding from the sale of "Protect Our Reefs" specialty license plates, the Mote Marine Laboratory annually provides grants to support research, education and outreach, and conservation efforts directly involved with preservation of Florida's coral reefs.
The primary focus of grant funding is the major reef tract that extends from Miami to the Dry Tortugas. However, proposals focused on coral reefs anywhere off the coast of Florida will also be considered.
Proposals will be considered for every element of the coral reef ecosystem and will not be limited to stony corals alone. Proposals may focus on coral reefs (reefs or shoals composed primarily of corals), or the coral reef ecosystem, including corals and other species and communities of reef organisms (including reef plants) associated with coral reefs and the environmental factors that directly affect them.
Applicant organizations must be based in Florida and engaged in coral reef research, education, or conservation. Applicants may be public agencies, educational institutions, or nonprofit entities.
In 2013, the program will emphasize start-up grants of approximately $10,000 and provide fewer medium-sized grants of approximately $25,000.
Visit the Mote Marine Laboratory Web site for complete program guidelines and information about previously funded projects.
