Capital Area United Way Invites Proposals for the CAUW SIF School Readiness Impact Initiative

Capital Area United Way Invites Proposals for the CAUW SIF School Readiness Impact Initiative

Capital Area United Way is seeking nonprofit organizations to replicate or expand early childhood development programs in low-income communities within the ten-parish capital area in Louisiana. Over the course of the CAUW Social Innovation Fund award, selected sub-grantees will work with CAUW to increase significantly the evidence base for their early intervention models.

In 2011, CAUW made a ten-year commitment to work toward the goal that children in the capital area will enter school ready to learn. To meet that goal, CAUW seeks to achieve the following outcomes: improve birth outcomes; engage, educate, and support parents to meet the needs of their young children; ensure that all children have access to quality child care and preschool; meet children's physical health and safety needs; and meet children's social-emotional health needs. CAUW SIF sub-grant proposals must work to meet one of those outcomes.

To be eligible, an applicant must be an organization as described in section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and exempt from taxation under section 501(a), or any entity or organization described in sections 170(c)(1) or (2) of the Internal Revenue Code. Sub-grantees will serve constituents solely within the ten parishes of the CAUW Greater Baton Rouge catchment area (East Baton Rouge, West Baton Rouge, East Feliciana, West Feliciana, Pointe Coupee, Iberville, Livingston, Ascension, St. James, and St. Helena).

Proposed intervention models must target children from birth through age five, or their parents. Applicants must propose to serve low-income communities, defined as those having a household income that is 200 percent or less of the applicable federal poverty guideline.

Eight to twelve sub-grants will be awarded. Annual awards are expected to range from $100,000 to $250,000. All awards must be matched 1:1 in cash by each sub-grantee. Provided satisfactory progress toward identified program goals and pending funding availability, the grant period will be for five years, with awards renewed on an annual basis.

Applicants are requested to submit a Letter of Intent and are required to submit a full proposal.

At least one representative from an applicant organization will be required to attend one technical assistance session in order for the organization's application to be considered . Duplicate sessions will be held on October 26 and October 30 at CAUW's offices, and on November 1 as a webinar. RSVP is required. If an interested organization cannot attend any of the three sessions, they must notify CAUW by November 1 so that provisions can be made to provide them with technical assistance.

The complete Request for Proposals and application instructions are available at the CAUW Web site.
