American Foundation for Suicide Prevention Invites Research Grant Applications

American Foundation for Suicide Prevention Invites Research Grant Applications

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention's research grants support the work of investigators from all disciplines that contribute to the understanding of suicide and suicide prevention.

In an effort to stimulate research in understudied areas, the foundation is selecting priority areas of study. Research applications in these areas will be reviewed along with all research grant applications; however, strong grants in priority areas may be given priority over similarly reviewed grants that are not in a priority area. For 2012 and 2013 the research priority areas are anxiety disorders or alcohol and other substance-use disorders either alone or in combination with other co-morbid disorders.

The foundation offers six types of research grants:

Distinguished Investigator Grants of up to $100,000 over two years are awarded to investigators at the level of associate professor or higher with an established record of research and publication on suicide.

Standard Research Grants of up to $90,000 over two years are awarded to individual investigators at any level.

Linked Standard Research Grants of up to $225,000 over two years are awarded to investigators at any level performing research involving three or more unique sites. Young Investigator Grants of up to $85,000 over two years are awarded to investigators at the level of assistant professor or lower.

Postdoctoral Research Fellowships of up to $104,000 over two years are awarded to investigators who have received a Ph.D., M.D., or other doctoral degree within the preceding six years and have not had more than three years of fellowship support. Pilot Grants of up to $30,000 over one or two years are awarded to investigators at any level. These grants provide seed money for new projects with the potential to lead to subsequent, larger investigations and that typically are driven by feasibility rather than hypothesis.

Investigators from all academic disciplines are eligible to apply for any of the above opportunities; both basic science and applied research projects will be considered. Applicants at institutions outside the U.S. as well as international applicants who are working at U.S. institutions are eligible. Grant applications are not accepted from for-profit organizations, or from federal or state government agencies.

Visit the AFSP Web site for complete program guidelines and application procedures.
