North Star Fund Invites New York City Social Justice Nonprofits to Apply for Community Organizing Work

North Star Fund Invites New York City Social Justice Nonprofits to Apply for Community Organizing Work

The North Star Fund has announced the opening of its fall 2012 grantmaking cycle.

The central focus of the fund's grants programs is support for groups organizing people to participate in the political life of their community. The fund only supports nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations, or groups with an eligible fiscal sponsor, working in the five boroughs of New York City.

There are two types of grants available.

Grassroots Action Grants support new, emerging, and small groups engaged in community organizing and base building to build leadership and grassroots activism in New York City's marginalized communities. Organizations with annual budgets under $250,000 engaged in community organizing are eligible. Grants range from $5,000 to $10,000.

Movement Leadership Grants are designed to provide a deeper investment of general support in effective organizations with a strong record of success in their community organizing work. Groups with annual budgets of up to $800,000 are eligible. In accepting the grant, a group's leadership team — both staff and members — commit to participating in peer learning sessions throughout the year. Grants provide $25,000 per year for two years.

A grant program application workshop will be held on September 5, 2012. RSVP is required.

Visit the North Star Fund Web site for complete program guidelines, an FAQ, and the application form.
