Vermont Farm Disaster Relief Fund Announces Sixth Grant Round for Recovery Assistance

The Vermont Community Foundation and the Vermont Agency of Agriculture have announced that the Vermont Farm Disaster Relief Fund is accepting applications for a new round of grants to help individual farmers who were affected by Tropical Storm Irene continue or return to production.

Since its creation nearly a year ago, the fund has awarded over $1.92 million to nearly two hundred farmers affected by storm-related flooding. As of August 1, 2012, total contributions received or pledged to the fund exceeded $2.46 million.

All farmers who were affected, including those who have already received a grant from the fund, are encouraged to apply for assistance if they are still struggling to recover from the effects of the storm. Preference, however, will be given to first-time applicants. A farm will be considered eligible if it is located in Vermont, is committed to remaining in business, and had gross annual sales of at least $20,000 in calendar year 2010, and/or is a small or start-up farm that can demonstrate potential for growth.

Grants may be used to help meet critical living needs by replacing infrastructure, seed, feed, livestock, supplies, and equipment lost as a result of Irene to the extent that those losses are not covered by insurance or can be covered by other sources of income. Grants also may be used to help pay outstanding bills such as farm mortgage costs, land lease payments, seeds and fertilizer, structural repairs, or animal feed bills. Grants cannot be used to help recover projected income from crops or livestock lost in the storm.

VFDRF will continue to offer grants for assistance as long as funding remains available.
