Open Society Foundations and Echoing Green Launch Black Male Achievement Fellowship

Open Society Foundations and Echoing Green Launch Black Male Achievement Fellowship

The Open Society Foundations and Echoing Green have announced the Open Society Black Male Achievement Fellowship, a new program for individuals dedicated to improving the life outcomes of black men and boys in the United States.

The program is part of the Open Society Foundations' Campaign for Black Male Achievement, a multi-issue, cross-fund strategy to address black men and boys' exclusion from economic, social, educational, and political life in the U.S.

The fellowships are designed to support social entrepreneurs who are starting up new organizations to help transform the lives of black men and boys in their communities. The program will select eight fellows who are generating new ideas and best practices in the three core areas of education, family, and work. Fellowships also will be awarded for efforts in the areas of communications and philanthropic leadership.

Each fellow will receive $70,000 stipend in start-up capital as well as technical assistance over eighteen months to help them launch and build their organizations; access to technical support, pro bono partnerships, and a community of like-minded social entrepreneurs and public service leaders; and other benefits.

Applicants must be 18 years of age or older, have legal status to work in the U.S., and have sufficient English fluency to participate in interviews and events. Partnerships (organizations co-founded and led by two individuals) are eligible.

Organizations must be the original idea of the applicant, must be in a start-up phase, and must be independent and autonomous. Organizations may be for-profit or nonprofit. Applicants must make a full-time commitment (minimum 35 hours per week) to the organization's development for the duration of the fellowship.

Applicants interested in the BMA Fellowship must use the Echoing Green Fellowship application form. Visit the Echoing Green Web site for complete program guidelines, eligibility requirements, and the application form.
