Ford Middle East Offers Grants for Grassroots Environmental Efforts in Region

Ford Middle East Offers Grants for Grassroots Environmental Efforts in Region

The Ford Motor Company Conservation and Environmental Grants program, a program of Ford Middle East in partnership with UNESCO, is accepting grant applications from nonprofit grassroots organizations conducting environmental projects in the Gulf Cooperation Council States, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria.

The program, part of the company's effort to support grassroots efforts to protect and preserve the environment and natural resources in the GCC and Levant countries, has awarded a total of $1.1 million to more than one hundred and thirty projects since its inception in 2000.

Each year, the program makes a total of $100,000 available to individuals as well as community and nonprofit groups that areoperating projects in the areas of preservation of the natural environment, environmental education, and conservation engineering. The program is open to applicants from Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, and the United Arab Emirates.

The judging panel will select initiatives for funding that demonstrate a well-defined sense of purpose, a commitment to maximizing available resources, and a reputation for meeting objectives and delivering planned programs and services. Last year's funded projects included a broad mix of efforts, including coral reef and Arabian Leopard preservation, a campaign to reduce illegal trade in wild and endangered species, a beach clean-up project using robots, student environmental networks, and more. A noteworthy trend for 2010 was the funding of youth-led projects, with students leading or actively involved in four of the ten winning projects.
