Chesapeake Bay Trust Invites Applications for Restructured Mini Grants Program

Chesapeake Bay Trust Invites Applications for Restructured Mini Grants Program

The Chesapeake Bay Trust Mini Grant Program awards grants of up to $5,000 to support activities at schools and nonprofit organizations in Maryland and the District of Columbia that help promote awareness of and participation in the restoration and protection of the Chesapeake Bay and its tributary rivers and streams. The program is supported by a partnership with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association Bay Watershed Education and Training Program.

In order to maximize the effectiveness of the Mini Grant Program and offer funding opportunities for fall, spring, and summer projects, the program has been restructured for fiscal year 2012 (July 1, 2011, through June 30, 2012).

Requests for Environmental Education projects proposed by schools or organizations working with schools will no longer be accepted on a rolling basis; instead, they will be accepted via a three-deadline-per-year system. The trust is still unable to provide reimbursement funding; this means that project start dates must occur after the date of decision. Two deadlines remain for the current fiscal year: For the August 12, 2011, deadline, projects may start no earlier than October 6, 2011; for the January 13, 2012, deadline, projects may start no earlier than March 13, 2012.

Requests for support for community engagement and restoration projects will continue to be accepted on a rolling basis. Applicants are asked to continue to observe the trusts' "six-week rule" and submit their application at least six weeks prior to the project start date.

The trust welcomes requests from the following organizations: nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations; faith-based organizations; community associations; service and civic groups; municipal, county, regional, state, and federal public agencies; soil/water conservation districts and resource conservation and development councils; forestry boards and tributary teams; and public and independent higher education institutions.

Visit the Chesapeake Bay Trust Web site for complete program guidelines and application materials.
