New Grant Program Offers Support for Independent Investigative Journalism Projects

New Grant Program Offers Support for Independent Investigative Journalism Projects

The George Polk Awards Program at Long Island University has initiated a grant program for experienced reporters to undertake specific investigative projects. Designed to respond to the crisis in journalism resulting from the laying off of thousands of journalists since the start of the U.S. economic downturn in 2008, the program will provide support for reporters in need of work and will promote investigative articles on the Web.

Underwritten by a grant from the Ford Foundation, the George Polk Grants for Investigative Reporting Program will provide investigative reporting project grants to experienced print and broadcast reporters. Special consideration will be given to journalists who have been laid off or are otherwise no longer employed by their news organizations, although this is not an absolute requirement. Ideally, an applicant should have a proven track record as an investigative reporter and propose an article or series of articles on a subject with which he or she is familiar.

The program will provide grants ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 each, as well as editorial supervision. The program will also provide editorial supervision once an application is approved and will attempt to place the resulting article on the Web and also in print or on radio or television.

Complete program guidelines and the application are available at the Polk Awards Program Web site.
