Astraea Lesbian Foundation's International Fund for Sexual Minorities Announces Letter of Inquiry Requirement

Astraea Lesbian Foundation's International Fund for Sexual Minorities Announces Letter of Inquiry Requirement

The grantmaking and philanthropic advocacy programs of the Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice are designed to help lesbians and allied communities challenge oppression and claim their human rights in the United States and internationally.

The foundation's International Fund for Sexual Minorities supports progressive social change groups, projects, or organizations that are led by lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex (LGBTI) communities and directly address oppression based on sexual orientation and/or gender identity/expression.

The fund's Panel Grants program reviews applications twice a year for either general or project support. Starting in fiscal year 2009-10, organizations interested in Panel Grants that are not current Astraea grantees will be required to submit a Letter of Inquiry to determine whether the organization will be invited to submit a full proposal. Organizations submitting a Letter of Inquiry will be notified of whether or not to submit an application within twelve weeks of submission.

The maximum size for a grant from the International Fund panel is $10,000. In recent years, the average grant size has ranged from $4,000 to $8,000, with grants at the high end being exceptional.

Grants will only be made to nongovernmental organizations and/or projects that meet in form and spirit the criteria which are used in determining non-taxable 501(c)(3) status in the United States of America (i.e. organizations operated for charitable or educational purposes).

Applicant organizations must be located in Africa, the Americas (except for Puerto Rico and Cuba), Asia and the Pacific, Eastern Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States, or the Middle East. The fund does not provide support for organizations based in the U.S. or its territories, Canada, Western Europe, Australia, or New Zealand.

To be eligible for funding, organizations must be primarily governed by and composed of people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, gender non-conforming, or queer-identified, and must work toward concrete social change to eliminate root causes of oppression and inequality faced by LGBTI people, as well as others who are penalized, persecuted, or harassed for their gender identity, gender expression, and/or sexual orientation. The organization's budget must be under $500,000, and the organization must have been active for at least one year.

Letters of Inquiry may be submitted in any language. Visit the Astraea Lesbian Foundation Web site for complete program information.
