Avon Foundation Accepting Applications for Breast Cancer Safety Net Grant Program

The Avon Foundation Breast Cancer Crusade "Safety Net" program supports public, community, and safety net hospitals and health care systems that provide breast care to low-income, at-risk, uninsured, and underinsured individuals. The goal of this initiative is to support programs that improve access to quality breast diagnostics and access to breast health care for the medically underserved. A demonstrated commitment to providing health care to underserved populations will be considered in the review process.

The program provides hospitals and health care centers with support for systems, personnel, equipment, and other infrastructure that will enhance their breast cancer care services to the medically underserved. The foundation does not pay for the reimbursement of direct costs of care.

The amount of funding allowable for each proposal ranges from $100,000 up to $500,000. Each applicant must determine the amount it requests based upon need, ability to effectively manage the amount requested, and justification (e.g. programs staff only versus requests for new equipment and program staff).

Application deadlines are determined by an applicant institution's geographical location. Letters of Intent are due by June 15, 2009 for organizations within 100 miles of New York City or Charlotte, North Carolina. Letters of Intent are due by September 15, 2009 for organixations within 100 miles of Houston, Texas, and all other cities/regions in the United States. (For 2009, deadlines have already passed for Boston, Chicago, Denver, Washington, D.C., San Francisco, and Los Angeles.)
