Union Square Awards Program Invites Nominations of New York City Grassroots Organizations
While the economic recession challenges the viability of local communities and organizations, the Union Square Awards remains committed to supporting innovative grassroots organizations in New York City. Nominations are currently being accepted for the 2009 awards.
The awards are a project of the Tides Center (a member of the Tides family of organizations). Awards of $50,000 each will be given to emerging grassroots groups and organizations addressing critical social justice issues in New York City. The program particularly looks to support organizations working on homelessness and hunger, HIV/AIDS prevention, education, and treatment, youth leadership and organizing, family and community development, economic self-sufficiency, and conflict resolution.
In addition, the Union Square Arts Award will provide $35,000 to an arts organization working with youth and families in low-income communities. Given the role played by arts and culture in creating educational opportunities, building community, and promoting social change, the program recognizes arts organizations in all disciplines, including dance, theater, music, visual arts, film, media arts, and creative writing.
Candidates are identified through a nomination process. Any person familiar with an organization's work may submit a nomination.
Nominations are accepted on a rolling basis and are reviewed as they are received. Complete program information and nomination forms are available at the awards program Web site.
