Alliance for California Traditional Arts Invites Applications for Living Cultures Grants Program
The Living Cultures Grants Program, a program of the Alliance for California Traditional Arts in partnership with the Walter & Elise Haas Fund, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, and the James Irvine Foundation, funds nonprofit organizations conducting exemplary projects in the traditional arts in California.
Folk and traditional arts are those art forms that are learned as part of the cultural life of a group of people whose members share a common heritage, language, religion, occupation, or region.
Examples of eligible projects include public presentations (community-based concerts, festivals, and exhibitions), workshops and gatherings, equipment and materials purchases, conservation, creation, or acquisition of important traditional arts items, intergenerational classes or other educational programs within a community, documentation of traditional arts, skills, ceremonies, beliefs, or performances, media, Web, and print publications, professional and leadership development, and other activities supporting California traditional arts and artists.
The grants program does not fund debt reduction, capital campaigns, endowments, fundraising projects, general operating support, or projects limited to an historical reference.
Applicant organizations must provide proof of 501(c)(3) nonprofit status or tribal status. Preference will be given to organizations with budgets under $1 million.
Grant awards are generally limited to $5,000 each. A small number of grants of up to $7,500 each will be awarded to projects that demonstrate significant impact on a particular cultural tradition. Approximately forty grants will be made in this funding cycle.
