American Councils for International Education Offers Support for Policy Relevant Research
American Councils for International Education Offers Support for Policy Relevant Research
With funding from the U.S. Department of State's Program for the
Study of Eastern Europe and the Independent States of the Former
Soviet Union (Title VIII), the American Councils for
International Education
provides full support for graduate students, faculty, and post-doctoral scholars to conduct policy-relevant research for three
to nine months in Belarus, Central Asia, Russia, the South
Caucasus, Ukraine, and Moldova.
Scholars in the social sciences and humanities are eligible to
apply for the program. While a wide range of topics receive
support each year, all funded research must contribute to a body
of knowledge enabling the U.S. to better understand the region
and formulate effective policies within it. All applicants should
clearly describe the policy-relevance of their work, be it in
anthropology, history, international relations, political
science, or some other field. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or
permanent residents.
The total value of Title VIII Research Scholar fellowships ranges
from $5,000 to $25,000 each. Typical awards include:
international roundtrip airfare from the scholar's home city to
his/her host city overseas; academic affiliation at a leading
local university; visa(s) arranged by American Councils in direct
collaboration with academic host institutions; opportunity for
housing with a local host family; a living stipend; financial and
logistical support for travel within the region; health
insurance; and ongoing logistical support from American Councils
offices throughout the region.
Students and scholars interested in Spring and Summer 2008
programs will need to apply by October 1, 2007; applicants
interested in Fall and Academic Year 2008-2009 programs must
apply by January 15, 2008.
Visit the American Councils Web site for information on this and
other funding programs.
