PND Reviews (03/12/02) -- Peter F. Drucker Foundation for Nonprofit Management

Mission:
To lead social sector organizations toward excellence in performance. The Peter F. Drucker Foundation for Nonprofit Management provides educational opportunities and resources to help nonprofits become more efficient and improve their skills.

Purpose of Site:
The Web site of the Drucker Foundation offers access to publications and other information resources that can help nonprofit organizations improve their operations. Designed by Some Pig Information Design, the site also provides information on all of the foundation's programs, including conferences and fellowships.

Background:
Founded in 1990, the Drucker Foundation believes a healthy society requires three vital sectors: a public sector of effective governments, a private sector of effective businesses, and a social sector of effective community organizations. The organization was named after and inspired by the father of modern management, Peter F. Drucker, an economist, professor, writer, and consultant who focused his career on management and economics in the public and private sectors.

The foundation primarily provides intellectual capital — writings of leaders, consultants, authors, and social philosophers — to leaders of social sector voluntary organizations. Other activities include conferences and videoconferences; leadership and management resources and publications; the Peter F. Drucker Award for Nonprofit Innovation; and the Frances Hesselbein Community Innovation Fellows Program.

Home Page:
The home page is densely packed with links and information, a true indicator of the wealth of resources to be found throughout the site. The top right corner — which remains static on every page — contains utilitarian features: a keyword search box and links to a subscribe page for e-mail newsletters, contact page, site map, "share this page" option, and a bank of links to other helpful organizations.

Outstanding Feature:
The Peter F. Drucker Award for Nonprofit Innovation recognizes nonprofits for innovative programs or projects that make a difference in people's lives. Winners of the award exemplify Peter Drucker's definition of innovation — change that creates a new dimension of performance. The Web site shares the discoveries of innovative nonprofits so that the entire sector can benefit from their experience.

In addition to written profiles about the award winners, video presentations are available thanks to technology from Yahoo! Broadcast. The foundation also profiles an applicant for the award each week in its Nonprofit Innovation of the Week feature. All of the weekly innovations are available on the site in the archives or by using a searchable database. Users can search for innovative nonprofits by discovery area (such as alliances and decision-making), field (education, human services, etc.), program (specific program names), organization name, and keyword.

Honorable Mention:
The Drucker Foundation has organized its articles, books, and resources into one area on the site for easy access. Users click on a book title to read a review and purchase it online through Amazon.com. Articles that have been printed in the organization's Leader to Leader newsletter are organized by issue and also indexed by author. Other offerings include videos produced by the Drucker Foundation, audio tapes of the foundation's conferences, and workbooks that deal with collaboration projects and nonprofit self-assessment tools.
