Mission:
To improve the quality of life in the Greater Philadelphia region through efforts that foster rich cultural expression, strengthen children's futures, and deepen connections to nature and community.
Background:
Otto Haas, a chemical company executive, and his wife, Phoebe, an astronomer, established their family foundation, the Phoebe Waterman Foundation, in 1945 to provide support to relief activities in Europe after World War II, scholarships for fatherless children, and funding for medical and educational institutions. After their parents died, F. Otto and John C. Haas took over management of the foundation and renamed it the William Penn Foundation to reflect the foundation's strong ties to Philadelphia.
Outstanding Web Features:
The recently redesigned William Penn Foundation Web site includes a section on the foundation's strategy containing key reports, evaluations, and research as well as a monthly column, What We're Thinking; a collection of feature articles highlighting broad trends in the foundation's grantmaking and deeper background on some of the issues that matter to it; a news section featuring recent articles from the foundation's Partners in Journalism; a grants database; and additional information about the foundation's grantmaking areas (children, youth, and families; environment and communities; and arts and culture).
